The paperwork wall, in the order it comes at you. State incorporation, the federal exemption, and the third layer almost nobody knows about until it blocks a grant. The federal registration that is free and that people pay strangers hundreds of dollars for. Why the address you put on your formation documents can get you rejected months later — with the rejection notice on screen.
Who actually runs the thing. Recruiting a board before you file instead of after. What founder control gets you, what it costs you, and the difference between the two. Choosing one focus and defending it against the temptation to chase every dollar. How founders get paid, legally and correctly — a subject most people are never told is permitted at all.
What a qualifying nonprofit can access at no cost, how to apply, and — the part nobody teaches — how to keep it. Advertising programs, software, cloud credits, design tools, and the public profiles funders check before they call you back. Approval is one problem. Staying compliant afterward is a different and harder one.
You cannot hire a development director, a media buyer, and a compliance officer. You can build them. A live build of an AI department, from scratch, on screen. So this is not a class about running a large, mature nonprofit, and I'm not going to pretend otherwise.
This is about the first eighteen months — getting an organization legally standing and operationally capable when it's just you. That's the part I've actually done, and it's the part almost nobody documents honestly.
